Microsoft Fixes BitLocker Recovery Key Bug — Windows 11 Only So Far

Some Windows computers have been greeting users with an unexpected screen asking for a long BitLocker recovery key — just to start up normally. This is not a hack; it is a software bug that makes Windows mistakenly think the drive’s security settings have changed, locking you out until you enter the recovery code.

Microsoft has now released a fix for Windows 11 users. If you are on Windows 10, a fix is not yet available, so it is worth locating your recovery key now before this bug affects you. Without the key, you could be temporarily locked out of your own computer.

How to check if you’re affected

Affected versions include Windows 10 and Windows 11. Here is how to stay prepared:

  1. Find your recovery key: Sign in to account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey with your Microsoft account — your key should be listed there. Write it down and store it somewhere safe at home.
  2. Install the fix (Windows 11 users): Open Settings → Windows Update and check for updates. The patch is delivered through Windows Update.
  3. Windows 10 users: Keep an eye on Windows Update for a future fix. In the meantime, having your recovery key on hand means you won’t be stranded if the bug strikes.
