WhatsApp is giving its 3 billion users a way to connect with new people without handing over their personal phone number. The app is rolling out a username feature that lets you choose a unique handle — something like @yourname — and share that instead of your actual digits.
Meta says there’s no public directory of usernames, and no suggestions are shown to strangers. Someone needs to know your exact username to find and message you for the first time, which keeps you in control of who can reach you. You can change or delete your username at any time, though freeing a username allows someone else to claim it.
How to check if you’re affected
Affected versions of WhatsApp include the latest releases on both iOS and Android where the username feature is being gradually rolled out starting in late June 2026.
- Update WhatsApp via the App Store or Google Play to make sure you have the most recent version.
- Reserve your username early: once you see the option, go to Settings → Account → Username and pick a name before someone else claims it.
- Some usernames are reserved for public figures, governments, and businesses and cannot be claimed by individual users.
