Essential Browser Security Extensions Everyone Should Install

Your web browser is probably the program you use most on your computer. It’s also the front door that most malware and scams try to sneak through. The good news? A few free extensions can block most of those threats before they ever reach you.

Think of browser extensions like adding a deadbolt and peephole to your front door. They’re simple to install and they work quietly in the background.

The Three Extensions You Need

1. uBlock Origin — Your Ad and Malware Blocker

This is the single most important extension you can install. It blocks:

  • Malicious ads that can infect your computer
  • Pop-ups and redirects to dangerous websites
  • Tracking scripts that follow you around the internet

1
Open Chrome and go to the Chrome Web Store (search “Chrome Web Store” in Google). Search for “uBlock Origin” and click “Add to Chrome.” That’s it — it starts working immediately.
uBlock Origin is different from “uBlock” (without “Origin”). Make sure you install the one that says “uBlock Origin” by Raymond Hill. It’s the trusted, open-source version.

2. A Password Manager Extension

If you use a password manager like 1Password, Bitwarden, or Dashlane, install their browser extension. It will:

  • Auto-fill your passwords on websites
  • Warn you if you’re on a fake version of a website
  • Generate strong passwords when you create new accounts

2
Search for your password manager’s name in the Chrome Web Store (or your browser’s extension store). Click “Add to Chrome” and sign in with your password manager account.

3. HTTPS Everywhere (or Let Your Browser Handle It)

HTTPS is the secure version of web browsing — it encrypts the data between you and the website. Most modern browsers now force HTTPS by default, but you can make sure it’s enabled:

3
In Chrome, go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Security, and make sure “Always use secure connections” is turned on. In Firefox, go to Settings → Privacy & Security and enable “HTTPS-Only Mode.”

What Your Browser Looks Like After

A cleaner, ad-free browsing experience after installing security extensions

After installing these extensions, you’ll notice:

  • Far fewer ads and pop-ups
  • Websites loading faster (because ads aren’t slowing them down)
  • Warnings when you try to visit a suspicious website
  • Your passwords auto-filling securely
Be careful about installing too many extensions. Only install extensions from well-known, trusted developers. Malicious extensions exist and can actually make your browser less safe. Stick to the ones recommended here.

Quick Checklist

  • Install uBlock Origin
  • Install your password manager’s extension
  • Turn on “Always use secure connections” in your browser settings
  • Remove any extensions you don’t recognize or don’t use

That’s it. Three simple steps and your browser is significantly more secure than before.
